Analysis
What the official said
“Every day, they are bravely turning back the illegal invasion at sea and seizing hundreds of billions of dollars in deadly narcotics before this poison can ever reach American shores.”
Claimant: President Donald J. Trump President of the United States
Agency or office: White House
Context
Presidential Message on the 236th birthday of the United States Coast Guard (White House briefing/statement, 2026-08-05).
Evidence
The President's message asserts the Coast Guard is seizing "hundreds of billions of dollars" in narcotics. Official Coast Guard and federal drug-interdiction reports publish annual seizure quantities and routinely-valued estimates; these documented annual seizure values are orders of magnitude lower than "hundreds of billions." Available public data (U.S. Coast Guard annual interdiction summaries, DHS and DEA drug-threat reporting) show seizure values typically reported in the millions to low billions of dollars per year, not hundreds of billions. The claim is therefore a large numeric exaggeration and misleading.
